AANWINST 24.02 - 26.05.2024
The new VRT MAX series 'AANWINST' reveals the work of seven remarkable artists - Leyla Aydoslu, Denicolai & Provoost, Maika Garnica, Frederik Lizen, Karl Philips, Laura Nsengiyumva and Thomas Verstraeten - whose recent additions to the collection of the Flemish Community are at the heart of this series. The focus is on the artists and their unique creative practice.
Each episode highlights a different work of art, takes the viewer behind the scenes of various Flemish museums and offers an intimate insight into the artist's life, their sources of inspiration and creative processes. This provides an in-depth understanding of what it means to be part of this respected collection.
At the same time, an exhibition is being organized in C-Mine Genk where the works of art from the series are shown. Each artist selected, in addition to their own work, a work of art by another artist from the collection, highlighting main lines and themes within this collection. The selected artists include Pelagie Gbaguidi, Jacqueline Mesmaeker, Francis Alÿs, Kasper De Vos, Liliane Vertessen, Pascale Marthine Tayou and Adrien Tirtiaux.
This exhibition raises questions about the relevance of these works for the art collection of the Flemish Community, in which everyone in Flanders participates indirectly. Can these works be considered 'of general interest'? The addition of a work to the collection of the Flemish Community has enormous significance for the artists, with financial support, care and presentation by national art institutions. These works of art highlight urgent social themes and do not shy away from social criticism. They represent the diversity and richness of the Flemish art scene and are an invitation to an involvement with art that belongs to everyone.
