Ralph Collier (° 1990, BE) creates film installations, sculptures, photographs and exhibitions that investigates the ruptures between fiction and reality.
In his artistic practice, Collier questions the nature of image, exhibition and reality by carefully unhinging their constitutive elements and meticulously modifying their fundamental or formal qualities. He reflects on the status of the image, what it can or should mean, and how it can be spectated, especially in the current culture of image overload. Collier considers that there are always ample contextual influences acting upon the viewer, hence impacting the way s/he can read an image.
Another area in which Collier revels is the liminal space where reality and fiction oscillate. He interrogates how reality is perceived or described, shifting what s/he more often than not does not see.
Embedded in this propositional undertaking is Collier’s fascination for the exhibition format. Having received an education in curating after his MFA, he has a thorough knowledge of the conventions and characteristics of exhibitions, which fosters his curiosity to play with one or more of the model’s parameters. He orchestrates time and space in order to curates encounters happening in them and hence tests the elasticity of the medium.
